Chica comes from W Lazy J stock dogs in Montana. Her Dad Spur is an accomplished ranch and trial dog. I have had the privilege of watching him work at John and Betty Williams ranch in Montana and he is truly a talented working dog with excellent temperament and structure. Some time ago I had watched Betty trialling Lor A Golden Zephyr of J2 (who has the same pedigree as Maude. Zephyr was in started cattle and I watched her fetch the whole course on her own and Betty just walked back to the re- pen and opened the gate. I had my eye on that pedigree since then and was so thrilled when I heard that Betty had Spur x Maude pups on the way.
Not long after Chica’s arrival I had the opportunity to attend the first of Betty’s cattle camps held at W Lazy J Ranch. My dogs and I have learned so much at Betty’s camps and we have had a tonne of fun and made so many great friends through the experience. Betty’s camps and clinics have become an annual event for us that I look forward to every year
If there is one word to describe Chica it is HAPPY. Her little tail is constantly wagging when she is working ducks, sheep, cattle, agility or obedience. It is hard not to smile and have fun working with her.
Chica’s confident and outgoing personality was evident from a young age.
On stock Chica is a strong fetching dog. She has a nice sense of group and rate. She is kind to her stock and has a natural ability to settle them. That said she will grip a head if required. Chica has a strong fetch on cattle and she will hit heads. In her limited exposure to cattle I have not seen her heel.
In agility Chica is a keen worker and intuitive partner. She picks up handling very easily and naturally as she is always in tune with my movements. With my recent focus on stock work I have been slow to trail with her in agility. She started competing in Jumpers in 2013 and did great at trials with some smoking 7yps runs. I finally put some contact behaviours on her last summer so she could compete at nationals. She did great at nationals with 5/6 Q’s
Chica is excelling in her Rally and Obedience training. I look forward to competing with her this fall.
